"The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed and that they are entitled to freedom of person, freedom of religion, freedom of property, and freedom of press."
-to John Cartwright, 1824, The Writings of Thomas Jefferson (Lipscomb & Bergh, ed., 1903-04), 16:45
(Some folks are trying to create a real Jeffersonian republic here on Earth.)
This is a science-fiction story I began writing a few years ago, largely for my own entertainment. The premise is that a group of Constitutionalists, Libertarians and suchlike plot an escape from the rising tyranny of the Federal government of the United States, and of the United Nations - which means they'll have to escape Earth altogether.
In a science-fiction story, the author is usually allowed one or two "given" suspensions of disbelief; for example, faster-than-light technology. I'm not a scientist or a university professor; I don't work for NASA or the Air Force; I've very little scientific background for the various technological theories I use in this story. But I do read a lot, by people who are so qualified, and I use that Internet Thingy to look things up.
I've no idea if this will ever be published. I started it mainly as an exercise in personal escapism and have no realistic plans for anything more, at this time.
