Many of the entries, I'd read before in other collections, others I skipped because I hadn't read the universes they were set in and didn't want to invest, but some bears repetition here, like the introduction to "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Grandpa?", set in John Ringo's Black Tide Rising universe:
    "I've always noticed, when I consult on disaster preparedness, a segment of society who are flat-out jealous and angry at those who are prepared. They're condescending, mocking and demeaning all the way along.     The various essays in the back of the book are worth reading too, some of which you may have already seen around the gunternet. His deconstruction of the mighty M1 Garand is infuriating for its validity (though I have tried, and even demonstrated, some of those partial-loading tricks (and I've never had M1 Thumb)). Another article describes how much research a serious writer does if he cares about his work (reminding me of David Drake, who in the fore- or afterword of one of his works said "Writing isn't easy if you care about the result"), in Williamson's case for A Long Time Until Now.

  • You know, when I first started handloading rifle ammunition, I tried Speer bullets. I found them inconsistent and therefore inaccurate - the ogive would change from one projectile to the next, so it would engage the seating die at a different height, so I was getting a different cartridge overall length each time.
